2 Rivers Remix Society presents a VirtualFeast.ca event: Live from Stagyn – a livestream of contemporary Indigenous music from the heart of the Nlaka’pamux Nation to the world. Live from Stagyn is focused on inspiring and empowering Indigenous youth in remote isolated reserve communities with a showcase of young artists from local Canyon nations (Nlaka’pamux and Lil’Wat) plus the added spice of Indigifunk performers and youth music ambassadors Curtis Clearsky and the Constellationz. Live from Stagyn is also a preview event for Virtual 2 Rivers Remix Feast of Contemporary Indigenous Music and Culture that will be streaming Sept 4•5•6 2020!
The Stagyn River is the spiritual home of the Nlaka’pamux Nation; the Stagyn (aka Stein) Valley was saved from logging by Indigenous cultural resistance and resilience; and Stagyn is a small isolated Lytton First Nation reserve community that is a 20k gravel drive and a river-powered 2-car ferry ride from the nearest paved road or store. The concert will be streamed live from an outdoor stage near Stagyn Hall, overlooking the dramatic confluence of the Stagyn and “Fraser” canyons.
Sto:lo/Nlaka’pamux host Ronnie Dean Harris (aka Ostwelve) will be our cultural guide throughout the evening, linking traditional feast sharing to today’s virtual feast of contemporary Indigenous artistry and no doubt he will busta few rhymes. Young, female Nlaka’pamux artist Ecko Aleck will dazzle the wide world web with her spoken word and post-urban musical vibe. Big Willie G1, the 19 year-old ‘Namgis/Nlaka’pamux Blues sensation (who played the Alert Bay Folk Festival at age 10), will get peoples’ virtual feet tapping and bopping.
Spiritual Warriors (including youth co-lead singer Daisy Joe) are next from the Lil’Wat Nation at the opposite end of the Stagyn Valley (45Km as the raven flies from the Stagyn stage but 175Km by tortuous road). Spiritual Warriors’ reggae beat and songs in the Lil’wat language will bring the streamee homies to their dancing feet. They are performing fresh from their 2019 album “Ancestors” which won “Best World Recording” at last year’s Native American Music Awards.
Curtis Clearsky and the Constellationz, cross-cultural Indigifunk musical magicians will blow the digital doors off the livestream and get the virtual stay-at-home parties swinging across the Nlaka’pamux and the net nation. Their global fusion includes Hip-hop with Latin-Funk, Soul, Ska, Reggae & Blues, funky rhythms, thundering percussion, blasting horns, soulful harmonies, slicing DJ scratches with empowering lyrics that gratify your soul. They amplify positive messages for Indigenous youth with uplifting musical vibrations. Constellationz band members descend from global Indigenous/Latinx/Black backgrounds including Aotearoa, Jamaica, Brazil, El Salvador as well as Turtle Island First Nations. In words and song, Curtis will bring us on his journey from Indigenous street youth worker to musical artist and entrepreneur.
